Poultry Rearing

Background

The Ambassadors of Hope began a trial poultry program  to raise funds for WOPLAH's transportation costs and phone bills, as well as Children's Club meals. After discerning the success of the project, WOPLAH expanded the project to 4 support groups. Support groups with the means to build a structure to house the chickens were supplied with 50 chickens each. The successes of these programs led to expansion to individual poultry projects. Eggs and chickens can be eaten to increase protein intake, sold for income, or brought to group meetings and shared with members who do not have poultry. The programs are empowering because beneficiaries have the autonomy to choose how many chicks to raise and can therefore determine the size of their poultry project. Beneficiaries are encouraged to use chicken droppings mixed with organic material to make fertilizer for kitchen gardens. By 2024, 944 chickens had been distributed through the Poultry Rearing project.

Objectives

The objectives of the poultry keeping project are to increase overall nutrition and protein intake, improve drug adherence, and create economic empowerment through ownership of a poultry project. After being selected to recieve chickens, WOPLAH equips beneficiaries with the skills and knowledge to care for their chickens and make educated decisions regarding how many eggs to raise, consume or sell depending on nutritional and economic needs.

The Future

WOPLAH intends to expand their own poultry project by 200 additional chickens, and renovation of their five shelters. This will provide a valuable example for other support groups through demonstration of proper project management and provide chicks for raising to pre-existing poultry projects as well as expansion to new support groups. In order to ensure maximum benefits of poultry projects, WOPLAH also plans to focus on consistent and on-going trainings for current poultry beneficiaries.
